SUMMARY:"Local & Intercommunal Conflict Resolution & Mediation" Virtual Training Course
DESCRIPTION:The aim of the course is to train civil affairs\, political affairs and other officers serving in peacekeeping operations\, political and peacebuilding missions by enhancing their specific knowledge and skills\, and enabling them to develop a deeper understanding of ways to prevent\, mitigate and resolve local and intercommunal conflicts.  \nThe course will address local and intercommunal conflicts. This is a new aspect in UN peacekeeping practices\, and some UN operations are assigned a specific mandate from the Security Council to provide good offices and support mediation of such conflicts. The course is balanced between the operational and tactical level\, and most of the conflict management tools are catered to the tactical level field work. \nLearning Objectives \nBy the end of the course\, participants will be able to: \n\nIdentify and understand various local and intercommunal conflict resolution mechanisms;\nApply acquired skills in local and intercommunal conflict analysis\, conflict monitoring and stakeholders mapping by using relevant tools and techniques;\nBetter understand drivers\, actors and dynamics of local and intercommunal conflict\, and identify historic\, structural and proximate causes of conflict;\nApply a range of skills\, techniques and good practices in negotiation\, dialogue\, facilitation and mediation;\nDevelop mediation strategies and inclusive mediation processes and use various modalities for greater inclusion and meaningful participation of women;\nUnderstand and apply concepts of BATNA (Best Alternative to a Negotiated Agreement) and ZOPA (Zone of Possible Agreement);\nDesign\, facilitate and run mediation processes;\nDeal with moral and legal dilemmas which may arise in conflict resolution and\n\nThe course program is designed for mid and senior level civil affairs\, political affairs and other officers serving in various units and offices\, such as Protection of civilians\, Rule of Law\, Disarmament\, demobilization and reintegration\, Security sector reform\, Human Rights\, Joint mission analysis center\, Joint operations center\, Military and Police components\, within field and peacekeeping operations (UN\, AU\, OSCE etc.)\, as well as those working in governments\, non-governmental organizations\, academic institutions\, or preparing to serve in peace operations. \nThe training will consist of lectures and facilitated discussions by senior experts and practitioners in the field\, and the activities are devised to be highly interactive through discussions\, Q&A sessions\, group work\, role-play and hands-on exercises and assignments. SUMMARY:“How to Negotiate Across Cultures”  Advanced One-Day Virtual Training with Miloš Strugar
DESCRIPTION:Conflicts today are increasingly complex as they correlate with issues of culture and identity. Crucial obstacles to negotiation across cultures stem from perceptions\, difficulties in communicating and understanding the other. The course will look into ways of approaching intractable cross-cultural conflicts\, focus on common ground for intercultural and interreligious dialogue\, and on exploring various methods for resolving cross-cultural conflicts through dialogue and negotiations\, or third-party facilitation and mediation. \nThe advanced one-day online training program with Miloš Strugar will cover necessary skills and techniques to effectively engage and negotiate across cultures. Miloš Strugar\, a high-ranking civilian officer with the United Nations Peacekeeping Department for over twenty years in various missions in Africa\, Asia\, and the Middle East\, will share various approaches\, cases and methods based on his considerable experience with negotiating and facilitating dialogue in diverse cultural settings. \nSpecial guest speaker\, Alastair Crooke\, will address the topic “Dialogue with Islamist Movements”. Mr. Crooke has extensive experience working with Hamas\, Hezbollah and other Islamist movements in the Middle East\, Afghanistan and Pakistan. He is a member of UN Alliance of Civilizations Global Experts. \nThe participants will learn how to: negotiate across cultures; approach intractable identity\, ethnic and religious issues; differentiate culture-driven negotiation styles and skills; apply communication skills and techniques in cross-cultural communication; understand the role of culture and a set of values in interpreting behavior and actions\, and in meaning- making; identify common ground for intercultural and interreligious dialogue; deal with moral and political challenges related to cultural differences. \nThe training will consist of lectures and facilitated discussions. All activities are devised to be highly interactive through Q&A\, group work\, and hands-on exercises. SUMMARY:“Political Negotiation Theory And Practice: Styles\, Skills\, And Techniques” Virtual Training Course
DESCRIPTION:The aim of the course is to develop a deeper understanding of negotiation theory and practice\, and to enhance specific knowledge and skills in negotiation which could be successfully applied in emerging and ongoing conflict situations. \nThe course will cover negotiation theories and practices in addressing conflicts\, with a special focus on new trends and actors in international affairs. Both interest–based and value–based conflicts will be addressed through the lens of cross–culture negotiations and identity issues. Developing negotiation skills will be our primary goal\, hence simulation and role-play exercises based on real case scenarios will comprise more than fifty percent of the content. The course is balanced between the political and operational level\, and most of negotiation skills\, techniques and tools are catered to the field work.
