DESCRIPTION:Virtual training course for political advisors and political affairs officers\n“NEW TRENDS AND ACTORS IN GEOPOLITICS – EMERGING CHALLENGES FOR POLITICAL ADVISERS AND POLITICAL AFFAIRS OFFICERS” \n1st – 3rd May 2020 \n  \nTopics: influence of information and digital technologies\, sources of information\, building rapport and network management\, internal and external coordination and cooperation\, negotiation\, inter-cultural dialogue\, talking to non-state armed groups\, communications with the media\, information and reputation management\n  \nThe overall objective of the course is to train political advisers and political affairs officers serving in peacekeeping operations\, political and peacebuilding missions by enhancing their specific knowledge and skills\, and enabling them to work effectively with the emerging challenges\, new trends and actors in geopolitics. \n  \nThe course will build on the knowledge and skills acquired during the course in April\, and explore in more depth some specific aspects and challenges of the role and functions of political advisers and political affairs officers. A prerequisite for attending the course in May is that the April course has been completed. If the applicant feels that they already possess the knowledge and skills offered in the April course and would like to apply for the May course only\, please submit a short letter stating this. \n  \nParticular attention will be paid to bringing the aspect of culture into political analysis\, strategies and activities\, with a view to enhancing the necessary skills to establish and maintain an effective inter-cultural dialogue. \n  \nSpecial focus will be placed on the influence of information and digital technologies on the scope of work of political advisors and political affairs officers\, including opportunities and risks (cyber diplomacy\, conflict analysis\, use of social media\, cyber security…). \n  \nThe course will also address the role and required skills of political advisors and political affairs officers related to communications with the media\, as well as information and reputation management. \n  \nThe course will also cover the topics of political reporting\, speech writing\, public speaking\, talking with governments and non-state armed groups\, negotiation\, internal and external coordination and cooperation… \n  \nThe course program is designed for mid and senior level political advisors and political affairs officers working in international organizations headquarters and field operations (UN\, AU\, EU\, OSCE etc.)\, and those working in governments\, non-governmental organizations\, academic institutions\, or preparing to serve in peace operations and in diplomatic service. \n  \nThe course will be conducted virtually via Zoom software. The training will consist of lectures and facilitated discussions by senior experts and practitioners in the field (former head of UN missions\, Special Representative of the UN Secretary General\, Ambassadors\, and Senior Political Advisors)\, as well as simulation exercises\, role play and case studies\, which will comprise over 50% of the course.
