“Gender Mainstreaming in Peacekeeping & Conflict Resolution — Cases & Insights from the United Nations” In Vivo Training Course

ABOUT THE COURSE
The objective of the course is to expand specific knowledge on gender issues with the view to applying gender perspective in all policies, actions, plans and procedures in integrated peace operations and to improve understanding of the role women could play in peacekeeping and conflict resolution, and to enhance specific skills of the participants in gender sensitive conflict analysis and mediation process design.
The in vivo course will take place over a period of five days, from 21 — 25 August 2023 in Belgrade, Serbia. The participants will learn from senior experts and practitioners in the field: Ms. Rana Rahal, Prof. Miriam Coronel-Ferrer, and Amb. Miloš Strugar. The activities are devised to be highly interactive through discussions, Q&A sessions, group work, and hands-on exercises and assignments. The program is balanced between the operational and tactical level.
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
— Deal with challenges in integrating gender perspectives in peacekeeping efforts;
— Differentiate between Gender and Sex, and develop a gender sensitivity to culture;
— Contextualize Gender in the UN and individual mission mandates;
— Identify challenges, and positive/negative impacts of peacekeeping on different gender groups
— Understand Gender Equality, Gender Balance, and Gender Mainstreaming;
— Apply a gender-sensitive approach in conflict analysis and conflict monitoring by using relevant tools and skills;
— Understanding the impact of conflict on different gender groups, and better understand conflict drivers, actors and dynamics;
— Mainstream Gender and conduct a Gender Analysis in Military Operations at different levels, and identify gender-related early warning signs of conflict;
— Understand and identify risks associated with women and girls in conflict;
— Design inclusive mediation processes and use various modalities for a greater inclusion of women;
— Apply a range of techniques, practical measures, and good practices to incorporate gender-relevant language in cease-fire and peace agreements;
— Define Conflict Related Sexual Violence, as well as its forms and goals;
— Address conflict-related sexual violence (CRSV) while drafting and negotiating cease-fire, security arrangements and peace agreements;
The course is designed for mid and senior level political affairs, civil affairs and other civilian, military and police officers serving in peacekeeping and political missions of the UN and regional organizations (AU, OSCE, etc.), as well as diplomats, and those working in governments, non-governmental organizations and academic institutions.
